Harmful vs. Healthful: Let’s Stop Scratching Our Heads and Focus on Natural

Let’s admit it, we all love makeup. Putting on makeup is part of our daily routines and many of us won’t leave the house without it. Even though makeup application is an essential part of our everyday, how often do we really take a good hard look at our makeup labels to see what we’re actually exposing ourselves to.

Here’s the scary part… prolonged exposure to harmful ingredients in many types of makeup can have unhealthy effects. Beauty doesn’t have to come at a price, you can have great makeup that is natural and healthy. Here are a few helpful hints so you can have the best of both worlds.

Look for “Three Free”
When it comes to nail polish, you may not think twice about what you’re coating your cute little piggy toes and nails with. Polish is full of nasty chemicals, so before you buy, look for the “three free” types. This means the polish does not contain toluene, formaldehyde, or dibutyl phthalate.

Organic Mascara
Your eyes may be itching and it’s not because of allergy season. Mascaras are full of strange waxes and preservatives, giving some wearers an allergic reaction. Instead, look for organic wear mascara, to ditch the itchy, red eyes.

Organic Sunless Tanner
Having tanned and shimmery skin just feels like summer, doesn’t it? We all know that sun exposure without SPF is a big no-no for your skin, but some of the sunless tanners out there are full of chemicals, making them equally as dangerous for your skin. Do yourself (and your skin) a favor and look for organic sunless tanner that leaves you with a pretty, light-diffusing bronze sheen, but minus the artificial ingredients.

The VirginN Difference
Knowing what NOT to put on your skin can only help you stay away from harmful products. VirginN is talc/paraben, bismuth and preservative-free.

Here are some other ingredients that you should avoid (VirginN does not use any of these in our products):

  • Bismuth Oxychloride
Can accentuate pores and cause break-outs on sensitive, acne prone, and/or skin with roseacea
  • Talc
Talc can cause dryness and skin irritation, also known to cause tumors in animals.
  • Corn Starch
A vegetable derivative that can promote bacteria.
  • Parabens
A preservative that has been linked to cancer and allergic reactions in the skin.
  • Carmine
A crushed beetle – used for color and is very irritating to the skin and can cause allergic reactions.
  • Kaoloin Clay
A cheap filler ingredient that can over-dry the skin

Remember to be good to yourself and your skin by paying attention to what you put on your face and body, and always remember to #claimyourbeauty.

To your naturally beautiful skin!

As an aesthetician, I needed skincare and makeup for my clients to apply after invasive procedures that would not harm their skin, yet would help correct and protect while healing. That’s how VirginN Pure Mineral Makeup and Bioactive Skincare began. I love working with women and seeing their eyes light up when we make them look more amazing than what they ever thought was possible.

Thanks for the information. You’re absolutely right, it’s so important to go natural with dealing with health and beauty products. I’ve been breaking out a lot lately, and I think it’s because my makeup has been clogging my pores. Maybe it’s time for me to look into some natural makeup. What do you think about mineral makeup?

Mia, we are fans of mineral makeup. But, they are not always natural and not all of them are good for your skin! Check out our compare and contrast and you can see how we measure up. Let us know if we can help you with any additional questions 🙂
