You may be saying to yourself, “When do I actually need to start worrying about aging skin?” The short answer is simple…it’s never too early to start worrying about skin protection and renewal! Everyone’s skin is different and whether or not your skin is aging prematurely depends on several factors including: heredity, environment, diet and overall health. While there’s nothing you can do about your family genes, there are several ways to protect and maintain healthy skin. Here are just a few examples of what you can do:
1. Don’t Smoke
Yes, smoking does in fact speed up the aging process of your skin, causing an early onset of wrinkles. The longer you smoke and the more you smoke do affect the amount of wrinkles you have and research suggests that skin changes can occur after only 10-years of smoking. So, do yourself (and your skin) a favor and avoid puffing on a cigarette.
2. Avoid Tanning
While a copper tan may look healthy, how you get it may not be the best for keeping your skin youthful. Tanning beds, sunlamps and baking in the sun without sunscreen is actually helping to accelerate the aging process of your skin. So make sure you avoid the tanning bed and sunlamps and choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher when going outside.
3. Hydrate Yourself
Not staying properly hydrated on a daily basis can cause those wrinkles to show up a little earlier than you expected. Our skin contains up to 30% water, so proper hydration is essential to giving your skin that plumped-up appearance. Plus, drinking at least 8 glasses per day will help to flush out any toxins, giving it an overall healthier appearance.
4. Don’t Forget About Your Neck and Hands
Taking care of your face is a surefire way of postponing the arrival of wrinkles, but don’t forget to take care of your neck and hands. Always apply moisturizer and sunscreen to your neck and hands in order to avoid premature aging. Plus your youthful looking face will match your vibrant and wrinkle-free hands and neck!
5. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
There are several reasons to mosey on down the fruit and veggie aisle in the supermarket, but did you know that consuming these foods might help you stay wrinkle-free for longer? Berries, rich green vegetables and many other fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidant compounds, which in turn can improve brain function, muscle tone, and even slow the growth of certain cancers. So avoid the sweets and pick up an apple to munch on instead for better, youthful looking skin.
To your wrinkle-free skin!
